چکیده

" …bright colours of leaves in the autumn are a warning signal to insects that lay their eggs on the trees in that season. " —Marco Archetti and Sam P. Brown (2003) [1] " The assumed attractiveness of bright colours to insects would appear to involve the supposition that the colour vision of insects is approximately the same as our own. Surely this is a good deal to take for granted. " —Lord Rayleigh (1874) [2] " Autumn colouring is of great interest in a comparative study of coloration. There is no reason to suppose that the colouring is of the slightest use to the trees, and yet it often displays to an extraordinary degree that beauty and perfectness which we are accustomed to regard as the result of the action of Natural Selection.

Autumn leaves seen through herbivore eyes.

Why leaves of some trees turn red in autumn has puzzled biologists for decades, as just before leaf fall the pigments causing red coloration are newly synthesized. One idea to explain this apparently untimely investment is that red colour signals the tree's quality to herbivorous insects, particularly aphids. However, it is unclear whether red leaves are indeed less attractive to aphids than gr...

The shared and separate roles of aposematic (warning) coloration and the co-evolution hypothesis in defending autumn leaves.

The potential anti-herbivory functions of colorful (red and yellow) autumn leaves received considerable attention in the last decade. The most studied and discussed is the co-evolutionary hypothesis, according to which autumn coloration signals the quality of defense to insects that migrate to the trees in autumn. In addition to classic aposematism (repellency due to signaling unpalatability, n...

Aphids do not attend to leaf colour as visual signal, but to the handicap of reproductive investment.

The evolution of visual warning signals is well known in animals but has received scant attention in plants. The coevolutionary hypothesis is the most influential hypothesis on warning signals in plants proposing that red and yellow leaf colours in autumn signal defensive strength to herbivores. So far, evidence in support of the hypothesis, which assumes a coevolutionary origin of autumnal lea...

Reply How to investigate a putative signal? Stick to the right method when assessing the response of a receiver The evolution of autumn leaf coloration moved into the focus of ecologists after the seminal publication by Hamilton & Brown (2001). In that article, Hamilton & Brown proposed the coevolutionary hypothesis, suggesting that red and yellow leaves in autumn evolved as warning signals to ...
